With the economy in recession, people are now trying to find ways to stretch their dollar further. One of the areas that cause people the most concern, and yet is easiest to fix, is the energy bill. For many with older homes, this means investing in energy-saving measures. For others who are building or looking to build new homes, constructing environmentally-conscious ‘green’ homes and installing energy-efficient appliances is becoming much more popular. To assist in development and construction, LEED® has launched a Green Building Rating System and Certification Standard.

LEED Certification
LEED® Certification is achieved by accumulating credits in six categories that address different areas of a building’s environmental performance:
- Site selection
- Water efficiency
- Energy & atmosphere
- Materials and resources
- Indoor environmental quality
- Innovation and design processes
A project must achieve 26 credits, at minimum, to earn an award from the US Green Building Council (USGBC). The team will work closely with owners to identify their specific goals, develop strategy plans, then implement those plans with the ultimate goal of achieving the level of certification desired. There are four certification levels, ranging from ‘Certified’ to ‘Platinum’. As more green features are added to a project, it qualifies for those gradually higher levels of recognition.
